“The” is definite article.
When we talk about series of mountains, we use The before its name.
· The Himalayas
· The Eastern Ghats
When we talk about peaks of mountains, we don’t use articles.
· Mount Everest
· Mount Fuji
· Mount Olympus
Before a river name, we use definite article (The).
· The Ganga
· The Thames
· The Nile
Ex: London is on the Thames.
Before the names of oceans, sea, and gulf/bay, we use definite articles (The).
· The Red Sea
· The Pacific Ocean
· The Bay of Bengal
(Note: We don’t use “The” before Hudson Bay)
We use “The” before group of islands.
· The Andamans
· The West Indies
Don’t use “The” before a specific island name.
· Java
· Sicily
· Ceylon
Use “The” before the name of canals, ships, planes, and trains.
· The Manchester canal
· The Qatar Airways
· The Orient Express (train)
· The Royal Caribbean (ship)
